Website Marketing in the Recession - Make These 3 Adjustments to Survive
Given the state of the online market in the current recession, wasting money on website marketing might not seem like a very bright idea. In fact it might seem foolish to spend money when you have little hope of recovering it. Yet even now there is enough money in the market to make a decent living. I am not kidding when I say this.
* Get A Plan
All you need to know is the way to go about making money. Website marketing is very important to this plan. If your website is invisible you are not going to make any money. So you need to spend money to make money. You might now say that you have no money. You don’t need to spend millions, just a few dollars in the right places can work wonders.
People don’t stop buying things in a recession. They reduce buying the number of things they would buy. So website marketing is important to make them think of your site when they do decide to buy something online. That’s when you will be able to make money, while your competitors don’t. That’s got to be a good pay off on a small investment.
* Make Money From Different Sources
Making money does not have to be restricted to selling products from your website. True website marketing geniuses will make money from schemes such as PPC or pay per click as well. Are your familiar with the concept of piggy backing a ride with someone going your way? That is what PPC is all about.
Pay per click helps you to add to the passive income that you generate from your website. If your website marketing helps you get a good page rank, you will have increased traffic to the site. Now use this traffic for generating passive PPC income by placing other people’s ads on your site.
Another tool that can be used for website marketing is SEO. Professional search engineoptimization can cost quite a packet. There are cheaper and easier ways to get SEO done.Shop around for options that suit your pocket. If you make use of it well it is bound to help boost your ranking and subsequently your sales.
Having a blog on your website is crucial to boost SEO. It is one of the cheapest options available in the market today. Website marketing also becomes easier if you can communicate with your prospective clients via your blog. Make sure to have regular updates on the blog, or no one will visit it.
* Advertise To Sell
Some people feel that it is a waste of money spending on online classifieds as a tool for website marketing. I disagree. A few well placed classifieds can give you enough business to recover the cost and make some money. This is using pay per click reversed.
You place ads on a well ranking website with loads of traffic to enhance your website marketing. The traffic that gets generated will help boost your income. Maybe through direct sales or via PPC.
Making money is possible when you know where to make it.

We were invested in web publicity,and were royally taken! We consider ourselves savvy but still we were rooked. How can a company weed out the great marketing hype from the real thing???
Linda,
I’m sorry that happened to you! There are a lot of unethical ‘SEO Companies’ out there trying to make a quick buck and we hear horror stories from clients all the time. I’m actually in process of writing a post about this topic “How to choose an SEO company,” so, great timing! I have a few thoughts for you on chosing your SEO company…
- Do they have a track record with references? Take a look at their SEO portfolio, contact their clients and ask about how the company performed for them. In some cases, the SEO company will have to sign an NDA, which means that you won’t get the specific example/reference. Some of our clients (including our largest and most successful project) we can’t talk about because of the NDA.
- How do THEY rank for their keywords? If they’re any good at what they do, they’ll be able rank on the first page for the keywords that they’re pursuing. The ‘internet marketing’ and search engine optimization’ keywords are very tough to reach the first page for, even with an army of SEOers on staff, but the more local keywords are important - Like how we pursue “Portland Web Marketing” since we’re a local company.
- What are their methods? As an industry outsider, the methods might not mean much to you, but to Google, using an unethical method can get you banned or severely penalized. A few of the best methods are article writing, niche directory submissions, and target piggybacking. A few methods you want to avoid are link exchanges, sending out mass anything (emails, requests, etc.), and making garbage keyword pages to boost your keyword-to-content ratio.
Hope this information is helpful! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
Linda, I think Tony is actually right, but you does not provide any details of your web campaign. Maybe SEO company tried to promote you using only “white” methods, but it really needs lot of time and money. It gives good results in mid-time perspective (one year and more), but maybe you need short-term results for less money for now. Or contrast situation - you need long-term results, but your contractor uses “gray” promotion methods, such as buying tons of backlinks. It can give short-term results, but can be a reason to get banned by search engines (google, yahoo, etc.)
Good idea is to determine a goals of your web campaing and clearly explain these goals to your SEO contractors. And, of cource, you need to find adequate SEO company. Tony’s recommendations can help you with it.
Good post. I think it is possible to recover from depression, but it takes time and patience. I can’t find any good message boards on the net, can you recommend any?
